Carla Fernández has built her brand around sustainability, fair labor, and celebrating Mexico’s rich cultural practices, particularly maíz (corn). Her spring 2019 Milpa collection raises awareness of the replacement of heirloom corn varieties with industrial cornmeal, which has less nutritional value and displaces small corn farmers. Her linen “Mujer Maíz” tunic depicts a woman wearing a corn skirt, an homage to the women in the “Flor de Margarita” cooperative in Chenalhó, Chiapas who embroidered it.
