Cotton and silk
Gift of Joy Marie Douglas
Object number2019.18.1
American designer Joy Marie Douglas founded the fashion collective Rebranded Project to challenge, redefine, and reclaim labels of criminality. Using the text of these damaging words – “criminal,” “convict,” “thug,” “public enemy,” and “felon” – Douglas worked with formerly-incarcerated individuals to create a collection that advocates for prison reform. Black people make up a disproportionate percentage of incarcerated people, a result of the historic institutional systems of oppression they face in the United States and throughout the African diaspora.
