Ultrasuede, one of Halston’s signature fabrics, embodied a luxurious ease and practicality that defined American sportswear during the 1970s. Made of polyester and polyurethane, it emulates suede, yet is breathable and machine-washable. The Japanese company, Toray created a soft, pliable version suitable for fashion that Halston discovered through Issey Miyake in 1971.
