For the spring 1985 Mini-Crini collection, Vivienne Westwood introduced her “Rocking Horse” platform shoes. Paired with short, hooped skirts, she intended the rocking motion created by the shoes to enhance the sway of the garments when the wearer walked. Westwood continued to design exceptionally high platforms that were intended to alter the wearer’s posture. According to fashion curator Claire Wilcox, Westwood’s platforms “began to be acquired by various enthusiasts, not always to wear, but as sculptural objects in their own right.”
