Amaka Osakwe’s spring 2013 collection explores secrets, the familial environments of small hometowns, and the sometimesstifling experience of growing up within them. This dress depicts an angry girl in the fringe – one whose secrets have been revealed. The dress itself also holds a secret – an àdìrẹ-dyed lining (see image). Àdìrẹ is a Yoruba indigo-dying technique with patterns derived from folklore, proverbs, and mythology. These motifs are historically passed from mothers to daughters. Osakwe’s lining features the “ayed’egbe” design, translating to “the world is on its side.”
