The inspiration for Alexander McQueen’s Fall/Winter 1999 couture collection for Givenchy was The Execution of Lady Jane Grey, an 1833 painting by Paul Delaroche that depicts the 16th-century beheading of England’s “Nine Days’ Queen.” McQueen’s work was often characterized by dark, yet romantic historical references.
