In the 1960s, young women seeking their own styles embraced small boutiques as consumers, designers, and owners. Boutiques were known for playing fun music and selling clothes in bright colors and synthetic materials, and amusing accessories. Mary Quant and Barbara Hulanicki of Biba opened their shops in London, while Betsey Johnson designed for Paraphernalia in New York.
