Helmut Lang introduced designs with exposed elbows in 1995, and Harper’s Bazaar deemed them one of fashion’s most influential trends soon thereafter. These “status slashes,” which became a signature of Lang’s work, were not purely decorative. They countered the high armholes and tight fit of his sleeves, allowing for ease of motion.
