The open-front bodice of this gown lends an air of undress without actually revealing the body. The robe à l’anglaise style was defined by its closely fitted bodice and one piece construction of top and skirt. Although form-revealing, the style was actually considered more modest than loosely fitted gowns of the period, which were associated with undress.
