In 1993, Suzy Menkes identified three primary fashion trends: “angry, grungy, don’t-care looks,” inexpensive styles that stood in contrast to the excesses of 1980s fashion, and clothes described as a “romp through a costume trunk.” The latter included slinky, beaded dresses that were reminiscent of the Jazz Age—a style proffered by numerous designers throughout the decade.
