This elegant ensemble was worn by the donors’ mother. It was made for her wedding on October 29, 1929 — the day of the stock market crash that triggered the Great Depression. Rather than tuck the wedding ensemble away in her closet, the wearer removed the sleeves and shoulder bow and repurposed it into evening attire.
