Dress

People and Brands:
Designer: Azzedine Alaïa

1939 - 2017

Medium: Wool jersey
Date: Fall 2008
Country: France
Credit: Gift of Veronica Webb
The demure front neckline and plain knit fabric of this dress are appropriate for day, but the low-cut back—accented with a coquettish bow—indicates that it should be worn for an “after five” occasion. These mixed signals are typical of contemporary fashion’s relaxed rules. With the addition of a sweater or jacket, this body-conscious design can be worn discretely during the day only to be revealed at night.
