The “lingerie dress” was worn for informal occasions such as garden parties. In 1902, The Delineator noted that the “dainty” white cottons used for these dresses were “more sheer than ever.” These diaphanous fabrics were provocative, but lingerie dresses were worn with a full set of undergarments beneath them.
