Date: 1994

By placing a pale pink sheath under black lace, Thierry Mugler reinforces pink satin’s association with the exposure of (Caucasian) skin. Pink has been described as “the exposed color” because of its association with nakedness and, by extension, with vulnerability and eroticism. “In light-skinned people, the color of the thin layer of skin tends toward pink,” writes Barbara Nemitz, editor of Pink: The Exposed Color in Contemporary Art and Culture.
