The 1960s "Peacock Revolution" reintroduced, on the grandest scale since the 18th century, a period of decoration and experimentation in menswear. The single-breasted jacket and pants shown here are cut from the reverse of a 19th-century paisley shawl. Worn in its original context, the shawl would have added a colorful contrast to a woman's pale-colored high-waisted gown. Here, in its reworked form, it has transitioned both gender and form. The loose, draping accessory has become a structured suit of vivid color and pattern, and a dynamic example of the more fluid definitions of masculine dress that existed during the sixties.
