Hat

People and Brands:
Designer: J. Suzanne Talbot

Medium: Natural straw, lace, silk velvet and millinery flowers
Date: c. 1908
Country: France
Credit: Museum purchase
This hat is typical of the stylish hats worn in the early years of the 20th century. Oversized and meant to perch on a luxurious mass of hair, these hats emphasized the fashionable, slim and sinuous silhouette. This hat is supported by a rigid metal wire frame, a construction method carried over from the 19th century. Talbot was one of the most prestigious of the Parisian milliners. The artistry of the atelier can be seen in the subtle layering of materials and interplay of textures and color, which is reminiscent of haute couture gowns of the period.
