Cardin began to work with cutouts during the early years of the 1960s. His first examples featured diamond shapes cut over the breastbone, while slightly later versions, such as this dress, used circles to similar effect. Cardin debuted his “Cosmos” line in 1967, which included cutouts to enhance his futuristic aesthetic.
