Suit

People and Brands:
Retailer: Saks Fifth Avenue

American, founded 1924

Designer: Thierry Mugler

1948-

Medium: Black wool twill and satin
Date: 1993
Country: France
Credit: Gift of Rose Marie Bravo
This suit channels the serious and intelligent woman Mugler has often identified as his ideal client, abandoning the constricting styles he helped popularize earlier in his career. Straight-legged trousers give the wearer a sense of height and presence. The jacket, nipped in at the waist, gives a subtle indication of the feminine figure that belies the suit's masculine tuxedo styling. This experimentation with new ways to represent his clients as powerful, yet sexy, women successfully transitioned Mugler into the minimalist aesthetic of the 1990s.
