Suit

People and Brands:
Designer: Vivienne Westwood

1941-

Medium: Wool tartan plaid and black silk velvet
Date: Fall 1993
Country: England
Credit: Museum purchase
This suit incorporates elements of Vivienne Westwood's fascination with traditional British dress, specifically in its precise tailoring and use of tartan fabric. She irreverently combines these elements with asymmetrical design and mixes tartans to create a suit that reflects her creativity and eclecticism. Much of Westwood's current work alludes to her revolutionary Punk designs of the 1970s; however, it is her synthesis of a streetwear-inspired aesthetic and meticulous construction that has established her as a leading contemporary designer.
