Evening dress

Medium: Printed multicolor paper with pink ostrich feathers
Date: 1965-1968
Country: USA
Credit: Gift of CITICORP
Ostrich feathers were as highly valued as diamonds at the turn of the twentieth century, although their worth later dropped precipitously. They are used as trimmings on this 1960s psychedelic paper dress, a garment with a quite brief intended life span. “Throwaway” items prefigured the fashion consumption pattern—frequent purchase of cheap, fast, disposable clothing—prevalent in contemporary culture.
