This activewear ensemble consists of a striped cotton twill blouson jacket, black wool jersey tapered pants, and matching ankle boots by Capezio. “From America’s lively leisure has evolved a new, home-grown fashion,” declared Time magazine (May 2, 1955) in a cover article devoted to Claire McCardell and the “American Look.” This look was epitomized by McCardell’s modern sportswear, which managed to balance comfort and practicality with casual beauty.
