Man's tuxedo

People and Brands:
Brand: Persall Tailors

Medium: Black wool and satin
Date: 1936
Country: USA

During the 1930s, a traditional black tuxedo—such as this elegant custom example from a highly regarded New York tailor—was not considered appropriate for formal events. For those occasions, a gentleman would wear white tie and a tailcoat. A 1934 New York Times article reported the advice of industry insiders: “Don’t wear a tuxedo except in the home, club or at stag affairs.”
