Dress

People and Brands:
Brand: Liberty of London

Medium: Silk velvet
Date: c.1910
Country: England
Credit: Museum purchase
Designed to meet standards of comfort and beauty, this dress’ smocked yoke and waist ensure a comfortable fit. Embroidery techniques such as smocking referenced the anti-industrialist attitudes of the Arts and Crafts Movement and associated Liberty’s garments with handmade craftsmanship. Liberty’s dresses were desired by Aesthetes, intellectuals, and bohemians well into the twentieth century.
