Wedding dress

People and Brands:
Designer: Shogren

1889-1918

Medium: Champagne silk jacquard with metallic yarns, ivory lace, ivory silk net, metallic ball fringe, rhinestones, and wax flowers
Date: c.1912
Country: USA
Credit: Gift of Mrs. Howard Serrell
Meta Buehner wore this dress for her wedding to Edward John Noble. The Shogrens combined traditional wedding dress elements, such as tulle, lace, and wax orange blossoms, with a fashion-forward textile in an exaggerated ikat pattern. The influence of Paris fashion is evident in the fabric’s exoticism, as well as the tunic effect of the slit-skirt and the asymmetrically draped bodice. The result is a sophisticated interpretation of the “something old, something new” theme.
