![]() | Curator’s Favorites A museum is like a shark; if it doesn’t keep moving, it dies. The Museum at FIT stays relevant by continually adding historically and aesthetically significant pieces to its collection. For the past several years, the museum has taken measures to combat the incredible “whiteness” of museum fashion collections by actively collecting and exhibiting work by Black designers and other people of color. This is important not only for reasons of equity and inclusion but also because diversity contributes greatly to creativity. While researching my exhibition Pink, for example, I discovered that the color has important connections with cultures as diverse as Japan and the African diaspora. The vast majority of museum collections also focus almost exclusively on women’s fashion—as though men did not wear fashion too! These looks represent examples of exciting acquisitions made over the past few years. – Valerie Steele, director and chief curator |
