Kenzo

French, founded 1970

Kenzo Takada began showing his work in Paris in 1970. LVMH, the French-based fashion conglomerate, purchased the Kenzo name in 1993. Kenzo retired in 1999. By 2003, the Sardinian-born designer Antonio Marras had been hired to design the women’s line. Five years later, he became the company’s sole creative director. In 2011, design duo Carol Lim and Humberto Leon, founders of the New York-based boutique and clothing label Opening Ceremony, took over at Kenzo. They were succeeded by Felipe Oliveira Baptista in 2019. Baptista remained in the position of creative director at the time of Kenzo Takada’s death in 2020, at the age of 81.
