Label Text:Rei Kawakubo’s shoes were flat-heeled, functional, and crafted from unassuming materials, even while other high-fashion designers were introducing elegant pumps. As evidenced by the man’s slippers shown here, Kawakubo’s interest in asymmetry influenced her footwear designs—as it also did her clothing. “Both sexes were fascinated with the rubber shoes,” reported the New York Times in 1983, following the opening of a Comme des Garçons boutique in Soho.
