Wool and soutache
Gift of Adele Simpson
Object number73.6.335
The elaborate braiding and soutache on this jacket signifies a particular regiment in the British Armed Forces. The heavy threads originally served as a form of protection against blades in hand-to-hand combat. As combat uniforms became less ostentatious during the 20th century, such ornamentation was relegated to formal uniform jackets (termed “mess dress”), still worn by British officers today.
