Label Text:The ensemble here is attributed to Lucile. Although unlabeled, these beautifully rendered garments—made with transparent, featherweight fabrics and exquisite trimmings—typify her style. The ornamentation might have been historically inspired, but Lucile’s euphemistically called “tea gowns” and negligees were seductive departures from the era’s characteristically modest undergarments.
Lucile’s most seductive designs were presented to her clients in the private “Rose Room” salons in the European and American branches of her house. While couture houses of the day were typically organized into public sales rooms and intimate spaces, Lucile’s were truly groundbreaking. Not only did they have the feel of a very elegant and modern private home, but the plush, boudoir-like Rose Rooms were ideal settings for her ravishingly racy lingerie and teagowns.
