DescriptionUnder skirt; black polished cotton with green, yellow and purple stripes; four gore, slightly flared, floor length; solid black bias cut 18 cm hip yoke; center back waist gathers; self bias border and double row hem ruffles trimmed with black bias stripes over cording; stiffened hem backing; center back opening with drawstring waist tape closing.
Label Text:Fashionable women wore layers of petticoats, many of which were made from plain white fabrics. Brightly colored petticoats began to appear during the 1860s, as synthetic dyes became widespread. These vivid styles were often worn over more subdued examples, since the topmost petticoat might be glimpsed at the hem of the wearer’s skirt as she moved.
