Cotton corsets were popular during the first decades of the 19th century. They slimmed the waist and also supported the bust. As fashion curator Colleen Hill explains, “Emphasis on the bust is created . . . by contoured cups that lift the breasts, as well as a busk that was inserted into a center-front casing to separate and define them.”
