Label Text:Each of these garments has been personalized by hand. Hippies used embroidery, patches, and hand-worked leather to create a distinctive style aesthetically opposed to the shiny, plastic, mass-manufactured products of postwar consumerism. They also gravitated toward denim for its working class connotations and often bought it secondhand. Clothing was a tool of protest for hippies – a way for them to make an immediately recognizable political statement.
