Label Text:School uniforms emerged during the 16th century at religious schools for lower-income students. They resembled ecclesiastical robes and served to instill discipline through standardization. As more elite schools adopted uniforms during the 19th century, they chose modes of gentlemanly dress to distinguish students from their religious counterparts. From this shift came the school jacket—more commonly known today as a “blazer”—as well as the use of military elements, such as the “sailor suit” style uniform shown here.
