Gift of Frank Smith Collection
Object number2008.84.33
As hemlines rose during the 1910s, shoes became much more visible — and increasingly colorful and decorative. The curved heel and slightly pointed toe of this pair are typical of the early 1920s. By around 1924, the slip-on pump was eclipsed by the “bar” shoe, which featured a strap over the instep.
DescriptionPurple / blue ombre cloth covered high Louis heel court style evening pumps in silk faille, tiny oval buckle ornament at center front with two rows of iridescent dark blue faceted stones, pointed toe, high vamp, reddish purple shoe back and heel, silk ribbed cord binding at top edge, kid leather and cotton lining
