The accessories of the 1840s emphasized modesty and decorum, a goal epitomized by this bonnet, which shielded the wearer's face from prying eyes. To achieve the idealized sentimental look, fashionable women adopted narrow flat shoes, tight corsets, and demure collars and undersleeves. However, these accessories were not without seductive appeal. The eyelet and pink flower trim of the bonnet is calculated to frame the face and flatter the wearer, essential in a period when cosmetics were taboo.
