Label Text:Jean Paul Gaultier began designing couture in 1997, while also continuing the ready-to-wear line that he founded in 1982. The designer regularly repurposed cast-off garments to create one-of-a-kind designs—a technique that he attributed to his early work with Pierre Cardin. The bodice of this couture ensemble is fashioned from a Chinese garment known as a qipao, the antique silk of which was heavily beaded by artisans in the designer’s atelier.
