Gift of Catherine B. Canda
Object number82.91.1
This delicate, revealing nightgown was made by a mother for her daughter’s trousseau. A bridal trousseau consisted of many items—from housewares and linens to outerwear—but lingerie was an especially crucial component. If a bride made her selections well, she would not need to purchase new underclothes for several years.
DescriptionNightgown; off white cotton with bobbin lace and aqua blue satin bows; square neck with interior drawstring channel; short lace sleeves with upper sleeve composed of three horizontal lace strips held in place by satin ribbon strip with four bow trimmings; deeply scalloped lace yoke back and front with satin bow with streamers at left front; vertical pin tucks below yoke front; lace insert above hem all around; slightly flared; floor length front with demi train back.
