Label Text:Hats began to assume new shapes by 1913. Smaller hats with vertical emphasis, such as toques, began to replace broad heavy styles, and hats with deep, low crowns and wide brims foreshadowed the cloches of the 1920s. Stylish evening turbans exemplified the “Orientalist” trend led by couturier Paul Poiret. Endless variations led Vogue to report that “it is the new idea to choose a hat solely on account of its decorative effect.”
